On our Facebook and Instagram pages we have been sharing common myths that people believe about therapy which may prevent them from seeking help or being fully open to the process. Our therapists have been debunking these myths so we will be highlighting them in this post.
Therapy means talking forever about my childhood
One of the most common misconceptions about therapy is that every session revolves around early childhood experiences. While your past can absolutely provide context to current behavior patterns, effective therapy is not a never-ending trip down memory lane. Modern therapeutic approaches prioritize what is happening in your life currently including stressors, relationships, coping, and the goals you wish to accomplish. Your therapist should only explore the past when it is relevant to helping you move forward. Therapy is solution-focused, collaborative, and action-oriented than most people realize and reliving your entire life story is not required to create meaningful change. According to our therapist Niah, “You are able to choose what you feel like talking about in therapy and when. Therapists tailor approaches to client goals rather than simply dwelling on history especially if it is unnecessary.”
I need to watch my mouth or my therapist will judge me
Many people worry about filtering what they say in therapy due to fear of being judged. This can include avoiding swearing, not being honest about how they are feeling, or presenting themselves in a certain way. Therapy is one of the few spaces in life where there is no need to perform and showing up as your authentic self contributes to the process being successful. A skilled therapists is not there to critique you, they are there to help you unpack what is behind emotions with compassion, curiosity, and professional boundaries to ensure you are fully supported. According to our therapist KM, “Therapy works best when you give your therapist the opportunity to see and value who you really are.”
Therapists see me as just another client
It is easy to assume that therapists move through sessions on autopilot, treating every client the same. In reality, therapists spend a significant amount of time thinking about each individual they work with-their story, strengths, progress, and how to best support them. Good therapists hold space for every client with intention and personalize the approach based on client needs, preferences, and goals. At Compassionate Counseling Company, you are not just a name on the schedule; you are someone who our therapists are invested in supporting. From tailoring interventions to remembering the small details you share, our therapists thrive to understand you deeply so the work feels collaborative and meaningful. According to our therapists Leslie, “Therapists aim to build genuine, honest, and trusting relationships with each and every client.”
Therapy means something is wrong with me.
Many people hesitate to begin therapy because they fear it labels them as “broken” or implies they are unable to handle the challenges of life on their own. Instead of therapy being a sign something is wrong with you, it is a sign that you are human. Everyone experiences stress, self-doubt, confusion, or emotional overwhelm and seeking support is a sign of strength and courage. Therapy can help you better understand yourself, build healthier patterns, and navigate life with confidence and clarity. According to our Practice Owner Julia, “Therapy isn’t about fixing what’s wrong, it is about understanding yourself more deeply and creating a life that aligns with your values. Seeking therapy is a sign of self-awareness, not weakness.”
Therapy will fix your problems
Therapy can be a powerful tool, but it is not a magic wand. It offers support, perspective, and the skills to help you navigate challenges more effectively. A therapists serves as a guide who will challenge unhelpful patterns and assist in building coping strategies but real change requires your participation and effort outside of session. Successful therapy equips you to handle the ups and downs of life with more resiliency. It is not about perfection, but progress and having a partner in your growth. According to our therapists Lis, “Therapy works best when combined with you making other changes in your life and/or utilizing medication to help with symptoms.”
